Assumption School provides a solid academic
education to students in an environment where Christian values
are held in high esteem. Our philosophy is to enrich each child
in body, mind, and spirit. This is accomplished in a multitude
of ways throughout the school year.
A challenging educational curriculum allows each
student to reach his/her maximum potential. Differentiated
instruction seeks to empower each student to obtain knowledge
and develop the practical skills to apply it in daily life. Our
comprehensive approach to education truly nurtures the whole
child.
Assumption School students in grades 4 through 8
take the Iowa Basic Skills Test each year. Although
standardized test scores are only one small factor in assessing
the overall success of an academic program, Assumption students
repeatedly score well above average on these tests. The
students graduating from Assumption School in 2007 had a 98%
rate of getting into the high school of choice. The majority of
graduates entered St. Dominic, but some students also entered
DeSmet, Incarnate Word, CBC, Barat Academy, and five different public
schools as well.
Assumption school is accredited by the Missouri
Nonpublic School Accrediting Association. In addition to
certified classroom teachers, there is a tremendous support team
as well. We have two learning consultants, five teacher aides,
a librarian, two nurses, a counselor, a receptionist and a
secretary. In addition to regular classroom instruction we have
five specialty teachers for Music, Art, Computers, Physical
Education, and Spanish.
Kindergarten through Grade 5
In Grades K - 5,
children are in self-contained classrooms (remain with the same
teacher). However, they do participate in the specialty classes
outside of their classroom. In grades 4 and 5, the students
change teachers for a couple of subjects in addition to the
specialty classes.
The Departmental System, employed in grades 6 –
8, enables students to receive quality instruction from teachers
who have specialized training in certain curriculum areas. In
practice, it means that a child, although assigned to specific
homeroom, will be taught by several teachers in the course of a
school day.
The priests, faculty, staff,
parents, school board and students of Assumption School hold the
following beliefs:
Children, as
creations of Almighty God, are to be respected, loved and cared
for.
Children in
our school have been entrusted to the faculty by their parents
as their most precious gifts, which are highly cherish by every
staff member of Assumption School.
It is the
task of our Catholic school, as a vital part of the entire
Christian community, to aid parents, the prime teachers, in the
Christian education of their children. To the priests, faculty
and parents of Assumption School, this means that our school
must be a Christian Community. Every aspect of the school
environment must reflect the spirit of real Christian concern
for one another. All our educational programs initiated or
perpetuated within our school must work toward developing the
student’s eternal desire to live in God’s love.
Assumption School has
an earnest commitment to integrating all pastoral and religious
education programs into a unified whole. In our programs
heavy emphasis must be placed on liturgical worship. We
are convinced that children need to be trained in the actual
practice of Christian praise.
In justice
to the students in our school, our academic program must be the
best we are able to offer in order to help prepare the students
well for their future lives. This means that while we value a
solid program of academia, we likewise consider the teaching of
religion and religious values of paramount importance.
As parents
and teachers entrusted with such a challenging task as Christian
education, we must be prepared, through academic courses,
private study and active involvement, to participate to the best
of our ability in the Assumption program of child development.
The
students, in a spirit of Christian charity and justice, are
encouraged to assume personal responsibility in their education.
The student
is provided with various opportunities to support and serve
their local and larger community unconditionally.
We feel it
is important that all members of our school community – priests,
parents, school board, faculty, and students (as far as they are
able) – review, affirm and revise, if necessary, our mission
statement and philosophy on a regular basis.
We also
believe that all new members of the school community should be
oriented to the purpose of our school by a study of both our
mission statement and school philosophy and the various policies
and practices of the school.
Faith is
nurtured in many ways at Assumption School. First, it begins
with prayer. There is an all-school prayer service every
Monday. Lower grades attend Mass on Tuesdays and the upper
grades attend Mass on Wednesdays. Each Friday the entire school
attends Mass. There are scheduled opportunities for the
Sacrament of Reconciliation. Retreats and other special events
add to the faith development of our students. Of course, all of
this is in addition to receiving solid Catholic instruction and
guidance each and every day in the classroom.
The faculty
and staff at Assumption School work diligently to support and
affirm parents in their role as primary teachers of their
children in the faith. An environment of joy and Christ-like
love is fostered in the school. This enables students to do
more than just learn about God. They come to truly know God and
experience His love through all of the people who care for
them.
